Assignment 10/30/13

Jimmy Margulies - The Record of Hackensack, NJ - Obamacare website trouble - English - Obamacare, Obamacare website, Congress, Republicans, Sebelius
Obama Care Website Trouble
The overall message I got from this was that millions of people are being denied affordable healthcare because of Obama care and website troubles. They think its time that someone stands up for them and tells them how they really feel. They want to stop Obama care and they mean business.
http://www.politicalcartoons.com/cartoon/ba48e37d-b3ae-4543-8c4e-064572017b86.html

Randy Bish - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - SPIES LIKE US, COLOR - English - SPY, SPYING, SPIES, GOVERNMENT, UNITED STATES, ALLY, ALLIES, ESPIONAGE
Spies Like Us
The overall message was that people are shocked when learning that Americans were spying on them throughout time. They feel like no matter what anyone does some one is always watching and they believe that there is something that you should be able to do about that.
http://www.politicalcartoons.com/cartoon/4755bcf3-7eb0-470c-ac53-d7da93bb7772.html

Joe Heller - Green Bay Press-Gazette - Trick or Treat - English - Trick or Treat, halloween
Trick or Treat
The overall message that I took from the cartoon was that Halloween is not what it used to be. It used to be a traditional holiday where small children dressed up and went out trick or treating with their parents following not far behind them. In todays world many teenagers and adults are going trick or treating and it is taking away from the smaller children who haven't had many years to trick or treat. Children were traditional Halloween costumes such as a witch or mummy. In todays world they are dressing up much differently in provocative clothing and things that don't really relate to Halloween and many people are getting upset because it has changed tremendously since they went trick or treating last.

139472 600 Darth Obama cartoons
Darth Obama
The overall message is that due to Obama care some things have to be changed. Even though a company, like a health insurance agency, have to change their rules and regulations to be able to afford and run there corporations smoothly. This puts a big dent in the world of businesses but some times things change and that's something that you have to live with.

139464 600 Obama and Merkel cartoons
Obama and Merkel
The overall message I received from this cartoon was that Obama has changed many things since he has been in office. One things is that the rules of privacy, these days, have came apart and are no longer really enforced. They are trying to show that Obama is always watching and that there always will be somewhere right there always watching every little move you make so be ready for it when it comes.

Civics Debate Questions

Should the drinking age be changed to 18?

1.) Do you think there would be more drinking and driving if the age was lowered to age 18?

2.) If an 18 year old can help determine who is going to lead our country shouldn't they have the right to drink as they want to.

Assignment 10/29/13

1.) Why is the elephant being arrested? - Cartoon's Message
2.) Why is the Capitol on its top? - Cartoon's Message
3.) What does the cartoon mean? - Subject of the Cartoon
4.) Why is the guy a hero? - Subject of the Cartoon
5.) Why are they on top of a mountain? - Use of Images or Artistic Techniques

First let your eyes "float over the cartoon. Next follow the cartoon's natural flow by discovering the interaction with the primary focus. Then you have to determine what kind of audience you are talking to so you know how it will react and influence them. You then have to understand the context of the cartoon and know what it says about what is going on. Looking for widely recognized symbols that everyone will be a custom to is the next step. Lastly you have to look at minor details in the cartoon that will contribute to the humor or the point of the cartoon.

There are five main points cartoonists use in cartoons. Cartoonists use simple objects, or symbols, to stand for larger concepts or ideas. Sometimes cartoonists overdo, or exaggerate, the physical characteristics of people or things in order to make a point. Cartoonists often label objects or people to make it clear exactly what they stand for. An analogy is a comparison between two unlike things. By comparing a complex issue or situation with a more familiar one, cartoonists can help their readers see it in a different light. Irony is the difference between the ways things are and the way things should be, or the way things are expected to be. Cartoonists often use irony to express their opinion on an issue.

I would say I am more conservative than literal. Traditional families and a strong military is what I believe in. Abortion, to me, is wrong and should not even be considered only unless something is seriously wrong with the child and/or mother or if one simply got raped. Taxes should be lowered and there should be cuts because it is not fair for the rich to have to pay more taxes just because they bring in more money, it's not their fault they were more successful than others. This was the way I was raised so therefore I believe the same way as my family does.

How do we keep events like this from happening?

There really is no way to keep this from happening except for taking legal action against these threats.

1.  Do you agree or disagree with changing the name?  Defend your position in one paragraph.
This name has been the same since long ago, so why should we change it now? I think that so many people like the name now it would just be a big confusion to everyone. If the name was meant to offend someone it would have been changed a long time ago. There are people who are just trying to cause a big problem when there is really no reason too. No one is meant to be singled out on the team or being offended therefore I don't know why people make such a big deal over this.

Anything as simple as picking up papers that someone has dropped or saving someone from drowning is making a difference, especially saving a life.
